College softball: Jackrabbits pick up a pair of wins

IOWA CITY – South Dakota State got strong pitching performances en route to a pair of softball victories over Power Four foes here Saturday.

The Jackrabbits blanked Georgia Tech, 6-0, then pulled out a 3-2 win over Iowa in extra innings at Iowa’s Pearl Field.

Tayler Baker pitched her first complete game of the season against Georgia Tech and the third of her college career. The shutout was the first of her Jackrabbit career.

Baker improved to 3-2 this season as she allowed no runs on 10 hits. She didn’t walk a batter while she struck out five Yellow Jackets.

Amanda Vancante hit a solo homer and Emma Vike a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

Bria Riebel smacked a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to give the Jacks the win over Iowa.

Vacanti got the nod in the circle for the Jacks and put together a strong appearance. Iowa got a runner on third base in the first, as well as runners on second and third base in the fourth, but in each instance the Jackrabbit sophomore worked herself out of the potential threats.

SDSU scored a single run in the first inning before Iowa took the lead with two in the fifth.

Riebel hit a two-out double in the SDSU sixth and scored the tying run on a double by Abby Gentry.

Vacanti retired the Hawkeyes in order in the bottom of the eighth to close a complete-game performance.

Riebel and Gentry had two hits apiece for the Jackrabbits.
