BROOKINGS COUNTY — Two 17-year-old juveniles are in custody following an early morning pursuit on June 1 through Brookings County on Interstate 29 in a stolen vehicle that ended in the Watertown area.
The vehicle, which was described as a Ford F-550 with a dump bed from the Sioux Falls area, eluded law enforcers and attempted to collide with other traffic, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
“Spike strips were successfully deployed on the vehicle by a Deuel County sheriff’s deputy where both front tires were damaged and eventually came off the rims,” BCSO Patrol Sgt. Manny Langstraat wrote.
The spikes didn’t end the pursuit, though, as the hobbled vehicle continued northbound on I-29 before its driver lost control and entered the ditch at Exit 180 in Watertown, where it became stuck.
“Since both occupants of the vehicle were juveniles, names will not be released,” Langstraat wrote.
No injuries were reported, and the teenagers were in the Codington County Detention Center as of the morning of June 1.
The BCSO became involved after responding to a call for help from the sheriff’s office in Moody County. Before the incident finally ended, other involved law enforcement agencies were the police departments from Brookings and Watertown, sheriff’s offices from Deuel, Codington and Minnehaha counties, along with tribal police.
Langstraat noted that the investigation into the pursuit is continuing, with sheriff’s offices from Brookings, Codington and Minnehaha counties involved in it.
