BROOKINGS — The recent death of 19-year-old Cooper Deatherage, who served as an assistant captain on the Brookings Rangers hockey team, brought an outpouring of support from the community.

Among that support was a lemonade stand by Kamden Hanson and Preston Jager on May 29, which raised $4,350 for the Deatherage family — a total given a bit of a boost by lemonade-loving officers with the Brookings Police Department.

According to social media, the Deatherage family will use the money to help start a scholarship fund through the Brookings Ice Skating Association in honor of Cooper.

Kamden is the son of Jake and Sarina Hanson of Brookings, and Preston is the son of Brady and Ciara Jager, also of Brookings.
