Brookings School District saving $150,000 on next insurance bill

Pleasant surprise for board members at this week’s meeting

BROOKINGS — Stacey VanBeek had some good news to share with the Brookings School Board.

The district’s director of business services informed the board at its June 8 meeting that the district insurance costs will be going down for the next school year.

She said the district’s current premium for the current school year is just over $933,000 for property, liability, crime and auto insurance.

VanBeek said she met with officials from the district’s insurance carrier, Associated School Board Protective Trust, in March and they told her to expect to see an 8% to 10% increase for the next school year.

She recently received a renewal notice from the ASBPT, and found the premium for the next school year would be $839,000, almost $100,000 less.

She said, “So I was super excited, because not only had we figured that there was going to be an increase, it went down $100,000. But they said hold on — we’re still trying to negotiate some things. (We) got a final renewal on Friday … The new premium is going to be $783,000. So down $150,000 from the prior year.”

Brookings Superintendent Summer Schultz, who serves on the advisory committee for ASBPT, said the organization was able to pool assets with some different states, which helped the organization provide the lower premiums.
