WHITE — Four people were hurt, including one with life-threatening injuries, in a two-vehicle crash in the early morning hours of June 7 northwest of White.
The incident involved a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and a 2022 Can-Am Defender utility task vehicle and occurred a little past 1 a.m. at the intersection of 473rd Avenue and 201st Street, according to information from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Both vehicles were on 473rd Avenue when they collided head-on, with the pickup northbound and the UTV southbound. No names have been released, but the extent of the injuries is:
• A 19-year-old man from White with life-threatening injuries. He was a passenger on the UTV.
• An 18-year-old man from Bath, who had serious, non-life-threatening injuries. He, too, was a passenger on the UTV.
• The 17-year-old UTV driver, of White, who had serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
• The driver of the pickup, an 18-year-old man from White, who had minor injuries. A passenger in the pickup, a 24-year-old man from Aberdeen, was not injured.
“The three occupants of the UTV were all transported to Brookings Health System for evaluation and treatment of their injuries,” Assistant Sheriff Dave Biteler wrote in a news release.
The 19-year-old was later life-flighted from Brookings to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls, according to the state DPS.
Both vehicles ended up in the ditch with disabling damage. No damage estimate was available, Biteler noted.
Other responding agencies were ambulance services from Brookings and White, the White Fire Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
