You Should Know: Community band to kick off concerts in June at Pioneer Park

The Brookings/Area Community Band, one of the region’s most time-honored summer traditions, has announced its 42nd season.

The band is in its 20th year under the baton of David Reynolds, director of Performing Arts at SDSU.

“We hope that music lovers of all ages will come and enjoy the entire series. Bring a lawn chair or a picnic blanket and find out what summer in Brookings is all about,” Reynolds said.

Complimentary treats are served at each concert.

The first rehearsal took place May 26 in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the campus of South Dakota State University. There is still time for musicians to register and join in on the fun.

Although each concert’s music is based on programmatic themes, every concert will include music that celebrates USA-250:

• June 14: “Around the World in 60 Minutes” — The band’s season opener features music from three continents.

• June 21: “Kids in Orbit” — It’s Children’s Night! Enjoy music that captures the wonder and imagination of the outer space, served up with plenty of cotton candy.

• June 28: “Broadway Comes to Brookings” — There’s no need to travel to New York when the band brings music from your favorite musicals to you!

• July 5: “Happy Birthday, USA!”— This patriotic concert includes a generous portion of flag-waving marches, a salute to veterans, and complimentary watermelon.

• July 19: “By Request” — There is something for everyone during the band’s season finale, including our famous burger-and-brat feed.

The band will also perform during the Brookings Summer Arts Festival and the Brookings 4th of July Parade.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. In case of rain, concerts are moved indoors to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center and begin at 7:45 p.m.
