Graduate profile: Deubrook’s Neely Gustad excels in service, leadership and planning a bright future

Sets sights on joining US Air Force

BUSHNELL — “It will give me a head start in life, some work experience and I’ll get some travel experience,” Deubrook High School senior, and soon to be graduate, Neely Gustad said of her decision to join the U.S. Air Force (or South Dakota Air National Guard). She’s looking to become a medical technician as a step to possibly pursue a career in the healthcare profession.

Gustad is strongly devoted to her own physical fitness; as of late, she has been pursuing an early morning fitness regimen at a gym in Brookings. Her workout program incudes strength training and cycling classes. Additionally, she’s in track, running in a variety of sprint events and relays.

Neely lives in Bushnell. She has three siblings. Her parents are Brian and Andrea Gustad. While Bushnell is in the Brookings School District area, open enrollment allowed Neely to opt for Deubrook High School, which is in White, about 10 minutes from her home. She likes “smaller schools.” There are about 30 seniors in her graduating class. “There’s more community; you get to know more people,” she said.

“Neely Gustad was selected for her post-graduate story because of her commitment to service, leadership and her future goals,” said Brad DeBeer, dean of students/activities director at Deubrook Area Schools, in his endorsement of Gustad. “Making the decision to join the United States Air Force immediately after graduating from high school demonstrates tremendous courage, maturity and dedication. Neely has worked hard throughout her high school career and has shown a willingness to challenge herself while preparing to serve her country.

“Her decision reflects strong character and a desire to make a positive impact beyond herself. Neety’s story is an inspiring example for younger students and our community, showing that hard work, discipline and service can lead to meaningful opportunities and a bright future. We are proud to see another Deubrook Dolphin choose to serve our country.”

“When I think of Neely Gustad, two things come to mind,” said Brock Landmark, PE/health/strength and conditioning teacher. “She always knows how to make people laugh; and never count her out. She has a way of always inspiring people and proving what she’s made of.”

Gustad’s approach to whatever she undertakes is simple: “If you have the right mindset, a positive mindset, you can do anything you want.”
