High school softball: Sioux Valley Cossacks sweep Deubrook

VOLGA — Sioux Valley swept Deubrook Area, 20-5 and 11-5, in high school softball action here Friday.

Zoe Hemmestad drove in six runs on three hits in the first game. Hemmestad hit a grand slam home run and two RBI singles.

Sioux Valley broke the game open with 13 runs in the third inning. Shelby Hai earned the pitching win, giving up five hits, striking out four and walking two over three innings.

The Cossacks collected 12 hits, McKenzie Schwab, Amelia Jacobson and Cassidy Smith getting multiple hits.

Claire Jorenby drove in three runs for Deubrook Area and Bristyn Gustad had two hits.

Sioux Valley snapped a tie with three runs in the fifth inning of the second game and never looked back. Audrey Murano homered, Shelby Hai tripled and Zaylee Lantgen singled, each scoring runs.

Schwab earned the win, allowing one hit and zero runs over two innings, striking out six and walking one. Neely Gustad took the loss. Kassidy Smith was the starting pitcher for Sioux Valley, striking out eight over 4 2/3 innings.

Sioux Valley collected 10 hits. Smith was 3-for-4 and Hemmestad added two hits. Deubrook finished with six hits, with Matte Bauman and Georgia Lunden driving in two runs apiece.
