College baseball: South Dakota State evens Summit League mark with series win

ST. PAUL, Minnesota – Freshman pitcher Kayden Rylance took a shutout into the seventh inning and South Dakota State scored in each of the first six innings in a 13-2 seven-inning baseball win over St. Thomas here Saturday.

The victory clinched a Summit League series victory for the Jacks, now 6-6 in league play and 11-21 overall.

Luke Wroblewski of SDSU hit the second pitch of the game over the fence in left-center for his second home run of the season.

The Jacks added single tallies in the second and third innings and broke it open with six runs in the fourth. All six runs in the SDSU fourth were scored with two outs.

Rylance, meanwhile, allowed only one hit through the first five frames although he worked out of a bout of control issues in the fourth inning in which he issued three of his four walks in the game. The freshman right-hander from Watertown matched a season and career high with five strikeouts while surrendering only four hits.

SDSU put the 10-run rule into play with three more runs in the top of the fifth and another in the sixth.

The Jackrabbits out-hit UST, 12-5, as five different Jackrabbits tallied two hits each.

Friday split

The teams split a doubleheader on Friday, SDSU winning the first game, 7-2, and St. Thomas the second, 4-1.

The Jacks scored twice in the third, fifth and seventh innings and once in the eighth of the opener. SDSU finished with six hits, three by Dayton Franke with two singles and a double. Luke Luskey drove in three runs.

Sam Schlecht and Tristan Augedahl were the pitchers of record for SDSU. Schlecht got the win with 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out six, walking three and giving up four hits to record his third win of the season.

St. Thomas took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh in the second game.

The Jacks had a runner on third and nobody out but failed to score in the top of the seventh, then loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, but struck out three straight times. Each team had seven hits, with Nolan Grawe and Keagen Jirschele collecting two apiece for SDSU.

Sam Novotny suffered the pitching loss.
