BROOKINGS — South Dakota State University and the Brookings Police Department are investigating a Snapchat video that purportedly contained racist and hate speech from bar-goers.

The video was posted to a non-official Snapchat account that is operated by students, and it has since been deleted.

Mayor responds to video

Brookings Mayor Oepke “Ope” Niemeyer has a simple message in a video: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Hate has no home here.”

“The university is aware of the video and has initiated an investigation. We take this matter seriously. SDSU is committed to being a welcoming community for all individuals,” a Tuesday statement from the university read. “The university does not condone any action that is not aligned with its core values, especially actions that target, threaten or undermine the safety of people. We will work with the appropriate university offices to fully investigate the matter.”

The Brookings Register also reached out to BPD Chief Michael Drake, who said his department has an ongoing investigation into the matter.
