BROOKINGS — A few raindrops failed to dampen the spirits at the unveiling of the America 250th anniversary community mural at the Brookings VFW on Thursday.
The months-long project to create the mural was spearheaded by the Brookings Regional Growth Alliance and funded with the help of a grant from the Brookings Public Arts Commission.
The public artwork is a mosaic of more than 950 hand-painted tiles that were assembled together to create the mural.
A crowd of about 100 people attended the unveiling,
Adam Forsberg, who painted three of the tiles, was at the ceremony with his mother, Ann.
“I think it’s great. I like to see the collaboration and all the the different designs,” Forsberg said.
His mother concurred “It’s a wonderful patriotic project. It’s awesome.”
Shari Avery, who has is an organizer of the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, said she is impressed with the project.
“I think it’s wonderful. Art in our community, you know that’s part of my life.” She said it is a great example of community spirit. “Every community group that was asked I believe helped create the tiles.”
She added “Look at the excitement. Look at all the people who are thrilled to be here and be part of this — the veterans that have been here. I just look across so many communities in this town for this project and it’s such a uniting thing.”
