Elkton-Lake Benton blew out De Smet on Friday night, while Sioux Valley fell to Clark/Willow Lake in area high school football action.

Clark/Willow Lake 26, Sioux Valley 8

The Cyclones returned the favor to the Cossacks as Sioux Valley beat CWL two weeks ago in Clark. The two teams had to play twice this season because each team was supposed to play Sisseston but Sisseton did not field a varsity team this season. Each team tried to find a different opponent but was unable to, forcing them to play twice.

CWL scored the only points of the first quarter as Emmerson Larson ran in a touchdown from four yards out. The Cyclones failed to convert the two-point conversion and it was 6-0 at the end of the opening quarter.

Mitchell Guthmiller would tie the game with a 10-yard touchdown run and Wyatt Hardt gave the Cossacks an 8-6 lead with the two-point conversion. However, that lead did not hold until halftime as Joey Reis found Cooper Pommer for a 12-yard touchdown and the Cyclones took a 12-8 lead into halftime.

CWL would then extend its lead to two scores with just over seven minutes to play in the game. Reis found Pommer again and this time it was a seven-yard score and Reis ran in the two-point conversion to make it 20-8. Jakob Steen then ran in a six-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left to make the final 26-8.

The Cyclones outgained the Cossacks 294-179. Hardt led Sioux Valley on the ground with 68 yards on 12 carries. Guthmiller had nine carries for 45 yards. Hardt was also 2-of-5 for 58 yards through the air.

Sioux Valley is now 2-2 and has a bye next week. The Cossacks will return to the field on Sept. 26 when they host Deuel.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 49-20 in the third quarter with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Brody Halverson to Wilkinson.
