Marshall sweeps doubleheader against Chutes

MARSHALL The Brookings Chutes Junior Legion team was swept in a doubleheader at Marshall (Minnesota) on Tuesday night.

The Chutes fell 7-2 in game one and then were shutout 3-0 in game two. Brookings is now 2-2 and will play next in a tournament in Waconia, Minn., June 13-15.

Game One

Marshall 7, Brookings 2

The Chutes only had one hit in game one and that led to the five-run loss.

Marshall scored three runs in the first inning. The first two runs came on a double and then another double pushed a third run across the plate.

Brookings got one run back in the top of the second. Dixon Dauer walked and then stole second and advanced to third on an error. He then scored on a fielders choice from Andrew Heinze.

Marshall extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth. They led off the inning with a single and then hit a two-run home run. The final run of the inning came on an error.

The Chutes scored their second run of the game in the top of the fifth. Tate Sonnenburg walked, Sutton Schneider reached on an error and Nolan Krogman walked as well to load the bases up with one out. Jude Meendering then hit Sonnenburg home with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

Marshall scored a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make the final 7-2.

Noah Lease had the only hit for Brookings and he was 1-for-3. Meendering and Heinze each had an RBI.

Heinze pitched the first five innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Schneider pitched the final inning and gave up no runs and hits and had two strikeouts.

Game Two

Marshall 3, Brookings 0

Brookings had four hits in game two but was unable to score any runs.

Marshall had two runners reach on a single and a walk in the second inning and one of those runners came home on a single to make it 1-0.

An RBI single in the fifth made it 2-0 and then an RBI double pushed the lead to 3-0 in the sixth. Brookings went down one-two-three in the seventh to end the game.

Krogman was 2-for-4 and Lease was 1-for-3. Meendering was 1-for-4.

Mason Diers pitched five innings for the Chutes and gave up two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and six walks. Meendering pitched the sixth inning and gave up one earned run on two hits with no strikeouts or walks.
