South Dakota State teams place at Summit League Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa The South Dakota State swimming and diving teams wrapped up the Summit League Championships on Saturday and the men came in third, while the women finished in fifth.

Men

Denilson Cyprianos and Cody Vertin each recorded runner-up individual finishes to help propel South Dakota State to a third-place showing in the mens division on as competition at the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships concluded Saturday at the University of Iowas Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.

Cyprianos claimed second place in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke, turning in a time of 1 minute, 44.77 seconds. Dylan Wright of Denver won the event in 1:42.52.

Aiden Carstensen placed seventh for the Jackrabbits in 1:48.84, while Braeden Glor finished 15th in 1:52.43.

A sophomore from Brookings, Vertin earned his third individual medal of the championships with his second-place effort in the 200 breaststroke finals, setting a career best with a time of 1:58.04. Marco Nosack of Denver claimed the title in 1:57.54.

Teammate Nik Keuser clocked the top time in the 200 breaststroke during morning prelims, surpassing Vertin for the school record with a time of 1:57.90. However, Keuser couldnt replicate that performance in the finals, slipping to fourth place with a mark of 1:59.87.

The Jackrabbits were able to overtake Omaha for third place in the team standings by qualifying a total of six swimmers for the A and B finals in the 200 butterfly. Braxton McGrath was the top SDSU finisher by placing third in 1:48.32, followed by Austin Smith in fifth, 1:49.08, and freshman Hayden Tellier in seventh, 1:51.88. B finalists Bryan Wong (1:52.03), Luke Nichols (1:52.48) and Kolden Kringen (1:52.77) claimed the 10th through 12th spots.

Also medaling for the Jackrabbits on Saturday was the 400 freestyle relay team, which rallied for a third-place finish in the final event of the night. The quartet of Charles Sieglaff, Cyprianos, Sam Johnson and Zavier Kranz combined for a time of 2:58.41 that was .08 seconds off the school record.

Individually, Johnson led SDSU in the 100 freestyle with a fifth-place and personal-best time of 44.78 seconds that ranks third on the programs all-time charts. Kranz moved into fifth in the program annals with his 10th-place time of 44.96 seconds, while Sieglaff placed 13th in the event in 45.50 seconds.

SDSU also received a 10th-place performance from Jack Ellison in the 1,650 freestyle, 16:06.90, with Collin Schock coming in 13th in 15:15.97.

Freshman Seth Berens added a point with a 16th-place showing in the 3-meter diving competition, tallying 187.15 points.

Denver claimed the team title with 975 points, followed by South Dakota 697.5 points and the Jackrabbits with a third-place total of 544 points.

Women

The South Dakota State womens swimming and diving team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Summit League Championships with a fifth-place finish out of seven teams.

Sophomore Poppy Mead paced the Jackrabbits with a pair of seventh-place performances. She posted a time of 17 minutes, 27.19 seconds in the 1,650 freestyle during the afternoon, then came back in the evening session to clock a time of 2:05.34 in the 200 butterfly. Her freestyle time now ranks seventh in program history, while she moved to third in the 200 butterfly with her time of 2:05.11 during the morning preliminaries.

Freshman Elyse placed 11th in the 1,650 freestyle, 17:43.23.

Meanwhile, Emma Ingalls joined Mead in the A final of the 200 butterfly and came away with a sixth-place finish in 2:05.33. Isabella Gnewuch of the Jackrabbits won the events B final in 2:06.48 to place ninth overall, with Hannah Warmbrand contributing a 16th-place time of 2:13.38.

Marissa Branham was the top individual finisher for the Jackrabbits Saturday as she notched a fourth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.26.

Also swimming in an A final Saturday night was Gigi Hioki in the 100 freestyle, placing seventh in 51.19 seconds. Hioki later teamed with Jenna Currier, Sara Juez and Emma Schultz for a fifth-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay, 3:27.40.

Currier also competed in the 100 freestyle B final, placing 13th in 51.97 seconds.

Rounding out the Jackrabbit effort Saturday night were Lilly Esmas (13th, 2:04.79) and Kaylin de Almeida (16th, 2:06.80) in the 200 backstroke.

Denver won its 12th consecutive team title after accumulating 1,078 points. South Dakota was second with 712 points, followed by Omaha with 568.5.
