Rangers open season against Sioux Falls, defeat Watertown

The Brookings Rangers had a busy Thanksgiving weekend as they hosted the Sioux Falls Flyers for a pair of games at the Larson Ice Center and traveled to Watertown.

After winning one of the three games, the Rangers are 2-3 on the season and will host Oahe on Saturday afternoon at 1:45 p.m.

Friday

Sioux Falls 4, Brookings 3 (OT)

BROOKINGS The Rangers played well and had a lead midway through the third period but couldnt defeat the Flyers in their home opener on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Scarlett Black opened the scoring with a goal from Brianna Marvici at 15:36 of the second period. Rebecca Harris doubled the lead with a goal from Emma Honner with 14:33 left in the second period but Julissa Peterson put the Rangers on the board with an assist by Anna Rasmussen with 5:55 left in the second period.

The Rangers took the lead with a pair of goals in the third period. Sawyer Triplett scored her second goal of the year from Brooke Kruse with 11:27 left in the third period and Kruse scored the go-ahead goal from Miyah Foerster and Triplett with 8:55 left in regulation.

But Aniston Murray scored the tying goal on a power play with 1:06 left in regulation and Ragyn Peska scored with 8:08 left in overtime to give the Flyers the win.

The Flyers out-shot the Rangers 49-23. Rorii Quam made 45 saves for Brookings.

Saturday

Sioux Falls 3, Brookings 1

BROOKINGS The Flyers completed the Brookings sweep by defeating the Rangers with a pair of third-period goals on Saturday.

Aniston Murray opened the scoring for the Flyers with a power play goal from Adriana Clark with 11:59 left in the first period. Triplett tied the game for the Rangers with an unassisted goal with 12:08 left in the second period.

Murrays second goal of the game from Marvici gave the Flyers the lead with 10:18 left in the third period and Rebecca Harriss power play goal from Murray with 59 seconds to go secured the win for Sioux Falls.

The Flyers out-shot the Rangers 46-11. Quam made 43 saves in the loss.

Sunday

Brookings 5, Watertown 2

WATERTOWN The Rangers scored four times in the first period to pick up their lone win of the weekend over Watertown.

Janel Lloyd gave Watertown an early lead with assists by Harper Hendricks and Emma Schleusner with 15:36 left in the first period before Grendler tied the game with an unassisted goal with 15:15 left in the first.

Triplett gave Brookings the lead with a goal from Foerster 30 seconds later and Rasmussen scored twice a power play goal from Ava Kahle and Foerster with 12:54 left in the first period and a goal from Edmison with 4:55 left in the first period to give the Rangers a 4-1 lead.

Grendler scored her second goal of the game unassisted with 12:32 left in the second period to put the Rangers up 5-1. Hendricks scored a power play goal from Lloyd with 4:57 left in the second period to cap the scoring.

Brookings out-shot Watertown 31-26. Quam made 24 saves to earn the win.
