BROOKINGS COUNTY — A 19-year-old man from Watertown was taken by air ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital following a motorcycle accident northwest of Bruce on April 21.
Carson Klatt’s medical condition wasn’t known as of April 22, according to information from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. The incident started at 10:25 p.m. and occurred on 459th Avenue near 201st Street.
“Due to the high rate of speed and the nature of the crash involving a motorcycle, EMS personnel on scene determined (Klatt) should be airlifted to another hospital for further evaluation,” Assistant Sheriff Dave Biteler told The Brookings Register. “(Klatt) was conscious and speaking with responders prior to transport.”
The incident unfolded when a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on Klatt, who, per the sheriff’s office, was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 81 near 199th Street at high speed on a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle.
“(Klatt) continued east on 204th Street and then turned north onto 459th Avenue, at which point the deputy lost visual contact,” Biteler wrote in an April 22 news release. “The deputy continued northbound on 459th Avenue in an attempt to locate the motorcycle.”
Biteler wrote that, after crossing 201st Street, the deputy observed a headlight in the west ditch and stopped to check it out.
“It was determined that (Klatt) had lost control while negotiating a curve, causing (him) and the motorcycle to leave the roadway and come to rest in the west ditch of 459th Avenue,” Biteler wrote.
Klatt’s motorcycle, damaged in the accident, was towed from the scene.
Other agencies responding to the accident were the Bruce Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance.
