BROOKINGS COUNTY — A field recently prepared for spring planting likely kept a tractor blaze from spreading beyond its point of origin.
There’s no damage estimate from the incident, which was reported at 6:13 p.m. on April 21 southeast of Bruce and northwest of Brookings at 205th Street and 470th Avenue, according to information from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported.
“The property owner, John Vande Weerd of Bruce, reported he was planting when he received an alert indicating an engine failure,” Assistant Sheriff Dave Biteler wrote in an April 22 news release. “After stopping the tractor and exiting the cab, he observed flames coming from beneath the cab area.”
The tractor became fully engulfed, but an attached planter sustained only minor damage, Biteler added.
“Due to the field being recently worked for planting, the fire did not spread beyond the immediate area,” he wrote.
Responding agencies included firefighters from the Bruce Fire Department, who stayed at the scene for 1.5 hours.
