KANSAS CITY The South Dakota State men dropped to 14-12 overall and 7-4 in the Summit League on Thursday night as the Jackrabbits fell to Kansas City 72-67.
With the loss the Jackrabbits dropped to second place in the Summit League and North Dakota moved into first place after it beat Denver.
SDSU fell behind 17-8 six and a half minutes into the game. The Jacks cut the lead to 22-18 with nine minutes left in the first half but the Roos pushed the lead to 26-18 a minute later. SDSU was then able to outscore Kansas City 15-9 the rest of the half and trailed 35-33 at halftime.
Kansas City (12-15, 6-6) stretched the lead back to eight five minutes into the second half. The Roos then led 52-47 but the Jacks scored five straight to tie the game with seven minutes to play.
Kansas City responded with five straight points of its own and then led 62-55 with just under four minutes to play. SDSU would then cut the lead to 62-61 with 1:47 left but the Roos scored six straight to put the game out of reach and handed SDSU its fourth conference loss.
The Jacks shot 39.3% from the field and were 7-of-23 from three. SDSU was led by Zeke Mayo who had 19 points. William Kyle III had 15 points and Luke Appel had 11 points and six rebounds. Charlie Easley had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Kansas City shot 38.3% from the field and was 8-of-30 from three. The Roos were paced by Kristion Courseault who had 17 points. Jamar Brown had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jayson Petty had nine points and Cameron Faas had eight points and seven rebounds.
Kansas City had 40 rebounds and SDSU had 35. The Jacks had 10 turnovers and the Roos had nine. SDSU was 16-of-25 at the free throw line and Kansas City was 18-of-21 at the line.
SDSU will stay on the road this weekend as the Jacks play at Omaha (13-14, 6-6) on Saturday at 7 p.m. You can watch that game on the Summit League Network.
