Bombers Gray swept by Watertown

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Gray 13/14U team was swept in a doubleheader against the Watertown 13/14U team on Tuesday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Watertown won game one 4-3 and then took game two 18-11. Brookings is now 4-15 on the season and will play Madison in Brookings on Wednesday night.

Game 1: Watertown 4, Brookings 3

Watertown scored a run in the top of the sixth inning and that led to the Arrows victory in game one.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. The Arrows scored their run on a wild pitch. Jay KC hit and Logan Scharr hit back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the inning. KC then scored on a Kale Weiker single to make it 1-1.

The Bombers scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Liam Johnson hit a lead-off single and then was thrown out after a single by Shinji Numata. Rocco Murano followed Numata with a single and then Brayden Britnall walked to load the bases up with two outs. Numata came home on a wild pitch and then Murano scored on a KC single to make it 3-1.

Watertown tied the game in the top of the fifth. The Arrows scored a run on an error and then another run on a ground out to make it 3-3.

Watertown hit a two-out single and then that runner scored on an error in the top of the sixth to give the Arrows the lead. Noah Hamann walked with one out in the bottom of the inning and made his way to second on a Britnall ground out. However, KC then flew out to center field to end the game.

Brookings had eight hits. KC was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Weiker was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Murano was 1-for-2 and Liam Johnson was 1-for-1. Numata, Scharr and Jess Johnson were all 1-for-3.

Jess Johnson pitched a complete game. He gave up three earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Watertown 18, Brookings 11

Brookings fell behind 12-3 and then scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to pull within one. However, the Arrows then scored six runs in the top of the fourth and then held Brookings scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the game ended due to time.

Watertown led 5-1 after one inning. The Arrows scored runs on an RBI single and a two-run triple to make it 3-0. They then hit two more RBI singles to make it 5-0. KC hit a one-out single in the bottom of the first and then scored on a Weiker single.

The Arrows scored four more runs in the top of the second. The first two runs came from a double and then an RBI triple and an RBI single made it 9-1.

Brookings cut the lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the inning. Numata hit a lead-off single and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2. Hamann walked and then advanced to third on a single from Jess Johnson. Hamann then scored on a wild pitch to make it a six-run game going into the third.

An RBI double in the top of the third made it 10-3. Then runs from a ground out and a single pushed the lead to nine.

Weiker led off with a walk in the bottom of the third and Liam Johnson followed with a single. Weiker scored on a Numata ground out and then Liam Johnson came home on a wild pitch to make it 12-5. Murano walked and scored on a Teagan Wallace ground out. Jess Johnson, KC and Scharr all hit RBI singles to make it 12-9. Weiker and Liam Johnson then hit back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 12-11 heading into the fourth.

The Arrows scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth with two outs. The first two came on a single and then two more runs scored on a wild pitch. Another run came home on a different wild pitch and then a run from an error made it 18-11.

Wallace walked with two outs in the bottom of the fourth but that was the only runner the Bombers could get on.

The Bombers had 10 hits in the loss. Weiker was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Liam Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. KC was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Jess Johnson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Numata and Scharr were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wallace had an RBI without a hit.

Scharr pitched the first two innings and gave up 11 earned runs on 10 hits with four walks and no strikeouts. Numata pitched the next two innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
