WAHPETON, N.D. The Brookings boys wrestling team opened the 2024-25 season by competing in the Dan Unruh Invitational at Wahpeton High School on Friday and Saturday.
Brookings finished 11th with a total of 59.5 points. Sisseton won the team title with 206.5 points while Fargo Davies finished second with 199.5 points. Lisbon finished third with 164.5 points, Kindred finished fourth with 158.0 points and Fargo North finished fifth with a score of 120.0.
Gabe Stern led the way for Brookings, finishing second at 189 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round, Stern defeated Sissetons Taylor Snaza by fall in 3:16 in the quarterfinals and Breckenridge/Wahpetons Henry Slettedahl in 3:30 in the semifinals. Stern lost to Kindreds Tanner Menge in the championship match by a 3-2 decision.
Mason Mathis and Blake Kannegieter each finished in fifth place for the Bobcats.
Mathis won by fall over Valley Citys Leighton Hendrickson at 1:29 of the first round but lost by an 18-2 tech fall to Barnesvilles Cameron Halverson at 4:55 of the quarterfinals. Mathis pinned Fargo Norths Emmanuel Forjolo at 3:27 in the second round of the consolation bracket and Brookings teammate James Patrick at 3:22 of the third round of the consolation bracket before falling to LPGE-Browervilles Mason Bruder by a 9-3 decision in the consolation semifinals.
Mathis finished the tournament defeating Halverson by medical forfeit in the fifth-place match.
After falling by a 3-2 decision to Fargo Norths Jack Miller in the quarterfinals Kannegeiter won back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket, defeating LPGE-Browervilles Tommy Miron by fall in 1:51 and earning a 14-9 decision over LPGE-Browervilles Heston Almendinger.
Kannegieter lost to Valley Citys Dylan Hunt by fall at 1:25 of the consolation semis but rebounded to pin Lisbons Brock Lyons at 1:57 of the fifth-place match.
Micah Stern placed sixth at 127 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round and losing by tech fall to Lisbons Greyson Lyons, Stern earned a 17-2 tech fall over Barnesvilles Brock Grabow and a 3-0 decision over Breckenridge/Wahpetons Tyler Burchill to reach the consolation semifinals.
Stern lost in the consolation semis when he was pinned by Sheyennes Thadd Hanson at 3:38 and lost a 10-6 decision to Briar Suko in the fifth-place match.
The Bobcats will return to action when they travel for a triangular in Pierre along with Tea Area on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
