Truck crash injures Brookings man

BROOKINGS COUNTY A Brookings resident was injured in one-vehicle accident on May 21 on U.S. Highway 14 near U.S. Highway 81.

Richard Thue, 67, was injured when the 2013 Kenworth T800 semi he was driving left the highway and jack-knifed during poor weather conditions, according to information in a Tuesday news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote that Thue was behind the wheel of the semi that was pulling a box trailer, noting that it was raining and very windy at the time of the accident. Thue told officers the wind and rain caused the truck to leave the roadway and enter the median when he turned broadside to the wind. When the truck entered the median, it turned and struck the trailer.

Thue was taken by Arlington Ambulance to the emergency room at Brookings Health System for his injuries. Damage to the truck and trailer is estimated to be around $6,000.

The incident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. The Kingsbury Sheriffs Office also assisted at the crash site.
