High school boys basketball: Sioux Valley Cossacks improve to 13-0 with win over Hot Springs

MADISON The Sioux Valley boys basketball team improved to 13-0 on Saturday night as the Cossacks beat Hot Springs 66-55 in the DSU Shootout.

Sioux Valley led 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Bison were able to cut the lead to 32-26 at halftime and each team scored 17 points in the third to make it a 49-43 Cossack lead going into the final quarter. Sioux Valley pulled away in the final frame, outscoring Hot Springs 17-12 in the fourth and staying unbeaten.

Sioux Valley shot 51% and was 6-of-20 from three. The Cossacks were led by Alec Squires who had 24 points and eight rebounds. Maxwell Engebretson had 13 points and 10 assists. Maverick Nelson had 15 points.

The Bison shot 44.4% from the field and were 8-of-23 from beyond the arc. Josh Kleinsasser had 19 points to lead Hot Springs. Braden Peterson had 17 points and six rebounds. Aidyn Janis had nine points and Matt Close had eight points.

Sioux Valley had 27 rebounds and Hot Springs had 17. The Cossacks had nine turnovers and the Bison had 12. Sioux Valley was 8-of-8 at the free throw line and Hot Springs was 7-of-10 at the charity stripe.

The Cossacks host Flandreau on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and then will play De Smet in the Sanford Pentagon Heritage Classic in Sioux Falls at 7 p.m. Saturday.
