Jean (Buck) Schaack passed away in Brookings, SD on May 8, 2026. A funeral service for Buck will be held at 10:00am on Thursday May 14, 2026 at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church in Volga, SD. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday May 13, 2026, at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.
Buck was born on April Fool’s Day, 1950 the son of Albert and Henrietta Schaack. He grew up on the family farm and attended a one room schoolhouse at Fairview #68 and Graceland until 8th grade in Henry, SD and graduated from Watertown High School. He continued his education for 2 years at Lake Area Vo-Tech studying the trade of machinist.
Buck went on to marry the love of his life Victoria Ann Schuchard in Watertown, SD on October 2, 1971. To this union they had 3 children Holly Slaba, Missi Schaack, and Stacey Adams.
After graduating from Vo-Tech, he enlisted in the National Guard and Served as a cook. He started his 40-year career at 3M in 1971 as a mechanic before becoming a supervisor.
During his free time Buck enjoyed hunting, fishing, horses, building anything little Vikki wanted! The happiest part of his life was when the grandchildren came along. He was also a part of the Freemont Township Board, and a member of the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church. He would also be known to always go and help any friend, family, or neighbor anytime of the day, or year.
Buck is survived by his wife Vikki Schaack of 54 years; his 3 children Holly (Sean) Slaba and their children Micheal and Ellie Slaba, Missi Schaack and her husband John McGaugh, and Stacey (Jay) Adams and their children Jackson and Lucy Adams; his sister and brother-in-law Joyce (Marv) McGillivary; his sister-in-law Sandra Schaack; his brother-in-law Randy (Sue) Schuchard; his brother-in-law Clay (Tammy) Schuchard; his sister-in-law Cathi (Jeff) Clapper; his mother-in-law Beverly David; and his adoring nieces and nephews.
Buck is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Henrietta Schaack; his brothers Jerry Schaack, Jack Schaack, and Jim Schaack; his sister Joan Zarro; his brothers-in-laws Todd Schuchard, and Chuck Schucahrd; and his nephew Todd McGillivary.
