BROOKINGS — South Dakota State University Extension is hosting a webinar to help farm families integrate childcare into their overall plans.

Farm families often face unique challenges, juggling long workdays, household responsibilities and caregiving for young children. The new online educational seminar, Integrating Childcare into Your Whole Farm Plan, will explore how childcare fits into farm risk management and family quality of life.

The seminar is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on June 9, 2026. It is free to attend, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “childcare”.

Designed for farmers, ranchers and farm caregivers who have young children or are planning for future family needs, the seminar will provide:

A better understanding of how childcare intersects with farm risk management and family well-being.

Options and strategies for integrating childcare costs into farm and household budgets.

Resources to support childcare planning for farm families.

Audrey Rider, SDSU Extension early childhood field specialist, said balancing farming, household responsibilities, off-farm employment and childcare can take a toll on farm parents and caregivers. This seminar will provide space to acknowledge those realities while offering helpful strategies and resources.

“Caring for children can be one of the most rewarding parts of farm life, but it can also be exhausting,” Rider said. “This webinar recognizes both the joys and challenges of parenting on the farm and offers practical tools to help families plan ahead.”
