BROOKINGS — The city’s inaugural Cinco de Mayo celebration in Pioneer Park on May 2 drew hundreds of people to the park to partake in authentic Mexican food, music, La Chancla games and more.

One of the festival’s organizers, Diana Gomez, earlier told The Brookings Register that planning for the festival had been underway since March.

“We’re just hoping to see if it becomes a movement here,” she said, adding that grassroots efforts and the generosity of volunteers played a big role in getting the festival off the ground.
