VERMILLION South Dakota State got off to a fast start on Saturday afternoon and didnt look back as the Jackrabbits beat in-state rival South Dakota 77-59 at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
SDSU jumped out to a 9-2 lead and eventually led 26-10 at the end of the first quarter.
South Dakota did have a strong second quarter as the Coyotes opened the quarter with a 12-2 run and cut the lead to 29-22. However, SDSU outscored USD 15-11 the rest of the quarter and led 44-33 at halftime.
The Jacks started the third quarter a lot like they started the game. They opened the quarter with a 17-2 run and led 61-35 with 6:26 to play in the quarter. SDSU pushed the lead to 65-38 and that was the largest lead of the game for the Jackrabbits. USD outscored SDSU 15-12 in the final quarter.
The Jacks shot 48.4% from the field and were 9-of-33 from three. Haleigh Timmer and Brooklyn Meyer each had 15 points and three rebounds to lead SDSU. Mesa Byom had 13 points and seven rebounds. Katie Vasecka had 12 points and five boards off the bench.
USD shot 41.5% from the field and was 6-of-26 from three. The Coyotes were led by Grace Larkins who had 27 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Larkins leads the Summit League in points, rebounds and assists. Carley Duffney had 17 points.
The Jacks had a 37-26 advantage in rebounding. SDSU had eight turnovers and USD had 10. The Jacks were 8-of-10 at the free throw line and the Yotes were 9-of-11.
SDSU improved to 17-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play. The Jacks will return home on Wednesday to take on North Dakota State at 7 p.m.
