I write this letter in support for Roger DeGroot and his desire to continue his efforts as an effective legislator for District 7.
I first collaborated with Roger when he was the superintendent of the Brookings School District. His leadership was critical to the successful passage of the bond issuance related to the construction of what would become the Dakota Prairie Elementary School in Brookings. That facility has been, and will continue to be, a vital component to the Brookings School District and the development of one of our most valued resources, our local youth.
As a teacher, coach, elementary principal, superintendent and school board member, Roger has utilized that experience to serve District 7 as a member of the education committee in Pierre. Roger has advocated for teacher pay, quality education and local control. he understands South Dakota must prepare the next generation of leaders and that starts with quality education for our students.
Beyond his education efforts, Roger has been a champion for affordable, workforce housing. Roger supported the passage of Senate Bill 21 back in 2023 which was the framework creating the Housing Infrastructure Financing Program. This program, administered by the South Dakota Housing Development Authority, was an important piece in facilitating dollars for infrastructure supporting multiple affordable housing projects throughout our state.
Roger has a background rooted in 40 years of service to education and he has now served in the Legislature since 2022. Now, more than ever, we need common sense leaders in Pierre like Roger.
