Ranger girls go 2-1 in final weekend of regular season

The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team went 2-1 in their final three games of the regular season over the weekend.

The Rangers beat Sioux Center in Brookings on Friday night and then fell 8-1 to Pierre Oahe on the road on Saturday. They finished the season with a 4-1 road victory over Mitchell on Sunday.

Brookings finished the regular season with a record of 18-3. The Rangers will compete in the Girls State Varsity Tournament in Mitchell March 5-7. Brookings will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Friday

Brookings 4, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers scored three goals in the first two periods and then each team scored in the final period.

Kinzey Grendler scored the opening goal for the Rangers with just under five minutes to play in the first period. It was a rebound off of a Miyah Foerster shot so she was credited with the assist.

Grendler scored her second goal of the game with just over eight minutes to go in the second period and it was unassisted. Foerster then scored a goal of her own 48 seconds later to make it 3-0 and she was assisted by Jordyn Anderson.

Addison Svoboda got the Storm on the board with 13:33 to go in the game. The goal came on the power play and it was unassisted. Sawyer Triplett scored with 40 seconds left in the game to make the final margin 4-1. It was also on the power play and she was assisted by Foerster and Anderson.

Brookings had 38 shots and Sioux Center had 22. Avery Dentlinger was in goal for the Rangers and she made 21 saves.

Saturday

Pierre Oahe 8, Brookings 1

The Rangers trailed 4-1 at the end of the first period and then the Capitals outscored them 4-0 the rest of the game.

Mallory Lehrkamp scored the first goal for the Capitals one minute and nine seconds into the game. She was assisted by Dakota McEntaffer. Lehrkamp scored again with 13 minutes left in the opening period and was assisted by McEntaffer again. Aubrey Stewart made it 3-0 with 8:10 left in the period and she was assisted by Lehrkamp and McEntaffer.

Triplett scored Brookings’ only goal of the game with 7:29 left in the first. She was assisted by Brooke Kruse. Ava Lavinger made it 4-1 12 seconds later and she was assisted by Reagan Emme and Elliot Bertsch.

Aubrey Stewart pushed the lead to 5-1 with 12:25 left in the second and it was unassisted. Brenna Ullman scored just under three minutes later and she was assisted by Emily Nemec. Addison Hunsley made it 7-1 with 1:47 to go in the second and she was assisted by Nemec. Micah Buffalo scored with seven seconds left in the game to make the final score 8-1 and she was assisted by Sophia Bales.

The Rangers had 23 shots and the Capitals had 25. Dentlinger was in net for Brookings again and made 17 saves.

Sunday

Brookings 4, Mitchell 1

It was 1-1 going into the third period and then the Rangers scored three goals in the final period.

Julissa Peterson put the Rangers up 1-0 with 13:46 left in the opening period. She was assisted by Triplett and Ava Kahle. Livaya Mimmack tied things up with 16:18 left in the second period and she was assisted by Taylor Sorben.

Triplett gave Brookings back the lead with an unassisted goal with 13:32 left in the third. Foerster then scored an unassisted goal with 10:17 to go to make it 3-1. Triplett put the exclamation point on the victory with an unassisted goal with 46 seconds to play.

Each team had 26 shots. Dentlinger had 25 saves for Brookings.
