WHITE — A one-vehicle accident on Feb. 21 near White ejected a Brookings woman and an Arlington man from their vehicle, leaving them alive but injured.

The incident occurred at 5:50 p.m. on 207th Street just east of 476th Avenue, according to a Feb. 22 news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. The site is southwest of White and northwest of Bushnell.

“A white 2002 Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound when it left the roadway, overcorrected, and overturned into a field on the south side of the road,” Assistant Sheriff Dave Biteler wrote.

The 35-year-old woman, who was driving, reported an ankle injury while her 32-year-old passenger reported a chest injury. The sheriff’s office told The Brookings Register on Feb. 22 that both were up and walking around, but sore, following the accident. Speed wasn’t a factor, either.

“Any time anybody goes down the road, seat belts are what we need to wear,” Biteler told a reporter. “Any time a person gets in a vehicle, buckle up because you never know what could happen.”

In the release, he wrote that the man and woman were taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Brookings Health System for evaluation. Neither was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, he added.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, other responding agencies were the South Dakota Highway Patrol, White Fire/EMS, and Brookings Ambulance.
