BROOKINGS – South Dakota State lost the Border Bell on Sunday afternoon as the Jackrabbits fell to North Dakota State 20-13 at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits lost six of the 10 matches on Sunday. It was the final dual of the season and SDSU finished 12-4 overall and 5-4 in the Big 12. The Jacks will compete in the Big 12 Championships in Tulsa, Okla., March 6 and 7.
The match started at the 125-pound weight class and No. 19 ranked Brady Roark took the mat for the Jacks. He lost a 17-6 major decision to No. 27 Ezekiel Witt. Cale Setaon then won a 4-1 sudden victory for SDSU at 133. He beat Tristan Daugherty.
No. 10 ranked Julian Tagg took the mat at 141 for SDSU and he won a 10-5 decision over Devon Harrison. No. 19 ranked Max Peterson won at 149 for NDSU and he beat Colin Dupill with a 16-7 major decision. No. 13 ranked Cael Swensen wrestled for the Jacks at 157 and he lost a 6-3 decision to Gavin Drexler. Swensen had to take an injury timeout in the first period because of his knee but continued the match.
SDSU won the first two matches after intermission. No. 29 ranked Marcus Espinoza-Owens won a 16-4 major decision over Boeden Greenley at 165. Moses Espinoza-Owens then won a 13-6 decision over Max Magayna at 174.
NDSU won the final three matches of the dual. No. 28 ranked Aidan Brenot won an 8-2 decision over Jarret Wadsen at 184. No. 28 ranked Devin Wasley upset fourth-ranked Bennett Berge with a 9-5 decision at 197. Shilo Jones beat No. 25 ranked Luke Rasmussen with a 10-6 decision at heavyweight.
