VOLGA – Flandreau got off to a strong start on Thursday night and the Fliers took down Sioux Valley 48-41 at the Cossack Center.
It was 6-6 four and a half minutes into the game. Flandreau then outscored Sioux Valley 7-0 the rest of the opening quarter and led 13-6 going into the second.
The run extended to 12-0 as the Fliers scored the first five points of the second quarter. The lead was then 22-10 with 1:51 to go in the first half and Sioux Valley hit back-to-back three’s to cut the lead to six heading into halftime.
Flandreau pushed the lead back to 10 two and a half minutes into the second half. It remained a double-digit lead for most of the third quarter and the Fliers led 35-22 heading into the final quarter.
Flandreau scored the first basket of the fourth and then Sioux Valley scored five-straight points to make it 37-27 with 5:47 to go. A 3-pointer from Connor Relf cut it to 45-40 with two minutes to play but then neither team scored again until Luke Sheppard hit two free throws with 23 seconds left to put the game on ice.
The Fliers shot 38% from the field and were 1-of-18 from three. Sheppard led Flandreau with 15 points and nine rebounds. Kody Kneebone and Alexaviers Poitra each scored nine points. Tate Hemmer had eight points.
Sioux Valley shot 28.8% from the field and was 6-of-35 from beyond the arc. Carter Sapp had 12 points to lead the Cossacks and he also grabbed eight rebounds. Relf had 11 points and Brady Hiltunen had eight points and seven rebounds.
Each team had 33 rebounds. The Cossacks had 19 turnovers and the Fliers had 15. Flandreau was 9-of-16 at the free throw line and Sioux Valley was 5-of-6.
Flandreau is now 10-5 and hosts Parker/Marion on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Cossacks dropped to 10-5 and play De Smet at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on Saturday at 7 p.m.
