BRANDON The Brookings boys golf team finished in fourth place as a team at the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament on Monday at Brandon Golf Course.
The Bobcats shot 297 as a team. Brookings head coach Andy Lee said he liked the way his golfers didnt get too high or too low on Monday.
We had a great day today. I’m proud of these guys for sticking with it throughout the day and not giving up. That led to us taking fourth place, Lee said.
Harrisburg took home the team title as the Tigers shot a two-over 286 as a team. Brandon Valley finished in second (293) and Yankton came in third (295). Watertown rounded out the top five (298).
Andrew Heinze had the top finish for the Cats as he came in third after shooting a two-under 69.
Lee said he was impressed with how Heinze handled the conference meet.
Andrew Heinze really stepped up for us shooting a 69. For him to do that, as a sophomore, at our conference meet is more than impressive to say the least, Lee said.
Tyson Lunn also medaled as he came in 11th (73). Jase Bauer and Issak Earley finished in 24th (77) and 25th (78), respectively. Rhys Heiberger came in 31st (79) and Jack Baszler finished in 36th (80).
Watertowns Jonathan Lake won the individual tournament with a 68. Aberdeen Centrals Cole Burst, Harrisburgs Jalen Dwire and Brandon Valleys Will Peterson all shot a 69. They finished in second, fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Class AA State Tournament is up next for the Bobcats. Theyll play the two-day tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City on Oct. 6-7.
Lee said the Bobcats completed the goal that he set heading into the conference tournament and this should give them some momentum as they head to state.
Going into (Monday) my goal for the team was to be top four and we got it done. ESD golf is extremely tough. We had golfers (Monday) shooting 75 and not making the top 15 to earn a medal. That’s how solid the competition is, so for us to be in the top four and have two medalists in Andrew Heinze and Tyson Lunn is a big step forward before the state tournament next week, Lee said.
