Yellow and Blue and you: Show your Jackrabbit pride during One Day for State campaign

BROOKINGS Today is a big day for folks who enjoy supporting South Dakota State University, as the One Day for State event is well underway and will be capped with the Yellow and Blue Block Party this evening.

Inaugurated in 2017, One Day for State is a 24-hour event overseen by the SDSU Foundation that has raised millions of dollars for various programs at the university. Last year alone, $2,757,790 poured in from 6,068 donors in the form of 7,172 gifts, per information from the foundation. Donations arrived from every state and 15 countries, including Canada and Australia.

Among the donors were students, faculty and staff, with 555 students giving a total of $8,793 and 655 faculty and staff providing $87,532.

Numbers are always important, especially in fundraising, because they show people really do have skin in the game, so to speak. Thats especially so with One Day for State, where the number of donors and not necessarily the individual dollar amount is what counts, especially when it comes to unlocking challenge gifts that, in the past, have ranged from $1,000 to $100,000.

The growth from 2017 to now is undeniable as well. The first One Day for State raised $298,000 from 1,196 donors not bad at all, considering a goal of 500 donors was established.

One Day for State is fueled by nostalgia and camaraderie, serving as an introduction to students and recent graduates on the power of philanthropy, according to the SDSU Foundation.

It certainly is, and todays ninth annual event is set to continue that success and what better way to celebrate than with a party?

Thats exactly what the Yellow and Blue Block Party is all about. Its a family friendly gathering from 5 to 8 p.m. put on by the foundation that will be at the Alumni Green across from the SDSU Alumni Center, 815 Medary Ave.

Attendees can expect to see the Bummobile, many food options, numerous activities and more, such as:

  • A Pride of the Dakotas performance at 6:30 p.m.
  • SDSU dance and cheer teams
  • Childrens activities, including bounce houses
  • A pep rally, along with SDSU athletes
  • Free SDSU ice cream, while supplies last (translation: come sooner, rather than later to have better odds of getting this tasty treat)

Bust out your yellow and blue and join us for a night of celebrating SDSU, the foundation wrote on social media. Its going to be a night to remember!
