Bandits swept in doubleheader in Yankton

YANKTON The Brookings Bandits were swept in a road legion baseball doubleheader with Yankton on Tuesday night.

The Bandits lost game one 10-0 and then fell 5-3 in game two. The two losses drops them to 11-10 on the season and Brookings will host a doubleheader with Rapid City Post 320 on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Yankton 10, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)

The Bandits struggled in game one as Yankton won via the 10-run rule in five innings.

Yankton scored two runs in each of the first two innings. Samuel Gokie, Matthew Sheldon and Easton Feser all walked to begin the bottom of the first. Gokie scored on a sacrifice fly from Gavin Johnson and Sheldon came home on a single from Beck Ryken to make it 2-0.

Tate Beste led off the bottom of the second with a walk and Easton Nelson walked as well to put two runners on with one out. Gokie hit Beste home with a single and Nelson scored on a Sheldon ground out to push the lead to 4-0.

Yankton extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third. Ryken reached on an error to start the bottom of the inning and T Sager followed with a single. Evan Serck then walked with one out to load the bases up again. Ryken scored on a sacrifice fly from Nelson and Gokie hit the other two runners home with a single to make it a seven-run game.

Feser and Jonhson hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Feser scored on a Ryken single and Beste hit Johnson home with a single of his own. Ryken then came home on an error by the catcher to make it 10-0 heading into the fifth.

Cooper Schneider and Plummer each hit a single with two outs in the top of the fifth but Tyson Antonen then hit a pop out to the first baseman and that ended the game.

Brookings had four hits. Plummer was 2-for-3 and Schneider was 1-for-2. Nolan Wagner was 1-for-1.

Breck Wilson started the game on the mound for Brookings and pitched three innings. He gave up seven runs, four earned, on four hits with seven walks and no strikeouts. Ryan Lockrem pitched one inning and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Game 2: Yankton 5, Brookings 3

Brookings had nine hits compared to Yanktons four in game two but the Bandits left seven runners on base and that led to the loss.

Yankton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings. Gokie and Shledon were both hit by pitch to start the bottom of the first. Feser hit Gokie home with a single and Sheldon scored on a double play to make it 2-0.

Sereck would hit a two-out single in the bottom of the second and later scored on a single from Gokie to push the lead to 4-0. Feser was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Sager to make it a four-run game.

Plummer led off the top of the fourth and got the Bandits on the board as he hit it over the center field fence to make it 4-1.

Jay Harris, Jon Kahler and Tre Christopherson all singled to load the bases up with no outs in the top of the fifth. Harris scored on a sacrifice fly from Jase Bauer and then Schneider hit Kahler home with a single to cut the lead to 4-3.

Yankton scored an insurance run in the top bottom of the sixth. Serck hit a one-out triple and then scored on a steal of home to make it a two-run game heading into the final half inning. Brookings then went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh.

Plummer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Bauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Schneider was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Maxten Jensen was 2-for-3. Harris was 1-for-2 and Kahler was 1-for-3. Christopherson was 1-for-4

Wagner pitched a complete game for the Bandits and gave up five runs, four earned, on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
