BROOKINGS COUNTY — An Arlington-area man’s fix-it effort on a truck went south fast after it sparked a fire, but no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred at 8:29 p.m. on May 20 north of Arlington at 45486 203rd St., according to a May 22 news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

“The vehicle owner, Gordon Converse of Arlington, told first responders he was working on a 1995 Chevrolet truck when the fire started,” Assistant Sheriff Dave Biteler wrote. “Converse stated he was working on the fuel pump when the vehicle backfired and ignited.”

Attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, Biteler added, and first responders were called to the scene. Firefighters doused the flames and no other property was damaged.

Converse estimated the value of the truck at $3,000.

Other responding agencies were the Arlington Fire Department and Arlington Ambulance.
