Storm damages areas in Brookings County

BROOKINGS COUNTY Mother Nature huffed and puffed her way through parts of Brookings County late Thursday night and into early Friday morning, with a storm system knocking down trees, turning a trailer and blinkering the power for some residents.

Brookings County Assistant Sheriff David Biteler provided further details in a news release Friday morning, noting that first responders found the following:

  • 12:10 a.m.: The Bruce Fire Department reported a possible funnel cloud north of town and requested the sirens be set off.
  • 12:50 a.m.: A BCSO deputy reported a tree in the power lines at 46814 204th St. Firefighters from Bruce were dispatched to the scene for a small fire that ignited from the sparking wires. No property damage reported.
  • 1 a.m.: The Bruce Fire Department reported that that wind had tipped an unoccupied camper at the Wagon Wheel Resort onto its side. No injuries were reported, and no damage estimates are available at this time.
  • 1:02 a.m.: Otter Tail Power Co. reported several poles were broke and power lines down on 206th Street between 463rd Avenue and 464th Avenue. This is a main power feed through the county and power was diverted to facilitate repairs. No damage estimates were available as of Friday morning.
  • 2:24 a.m.: A deputy with the BCSO assessing damage in the White area reported several downed trees around town. A trampoline was also reported to have been blown from a residence, landing in the city park.
