SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bullets went 1-3 in the 16U Dakota Classic in Sioux Falls over the weekend.
The Bullets lost to Springfield (Missouri) 8-0 on Friday and then fell to Blue Springs (Missouri) 7- in their first game on Saturday. In their second game on Saturday they beat Eden Prairie (Minnesota) 10-2 and then lost to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (Minnesota) 15-14 on Sunday.
Brookings is now 6-10 and plays a doubleheader at Renner on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Friday
Springfield 8, Brookings 0
The Bullets had just two hits in their loss in the opening game of the tournament.
Springfield scored three runs in the top of the second. They scored on an RBI single, an RBI double and a wild pitch.
Springfield doubled its lead in the top of the fourth. They scored a run on a passed ball and another run on a sacrifice fly. Another run came home on the throw to the plate on the sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
The final two runs of the game came in the fifth. Springfield scored runs on an RBI triple and an RBI single to make the final 8-0.
Jace Jaacks was 1-for-2 and Lincoln Helmbolt was 1-for-3. Helmbolt pitched three and a third innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on four hits with one strikeout and five walks. Rylan Hesser pitched the final inning and two thirds and gave up two earned runs on two hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Saturday
Blue Springs 7, Brookings 3
Blue Springs led 6-1 after the first two innings and that was enough of a cushion to get them the victory over the Bullets.
Blue Springs scored three runs in the bottom of the first. The first two runs came home on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Then an RBI single made it 3-0.
Brookings scored a run in the top of the second. Mack Nelson singled and then an error by the third baseman allowed Wesden Van Ede to score.
Blue Springs would answer with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. They scored two runs on a triple and then an RBI single made it 6-1.
The Bullets cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth. Eli Ellsworth was on third and scored on a ground out from Nelson.
Brookings scored another run in the top of the fifth. Hesser singled and that sent Helmbolt home to make it 6-3.
Blue Springs got that run back in the bottom of the inning. That run came home on an error to make the final 7-3.
Brookinsg had five hits in the loss. Hesser was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Nelson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ellsworth was 2-for-2.
Aiden Adelman pitched the first inning and a third for the Bullets. He gave up six earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and six walks.
Brookings 10, Eden Prairie 2
Eden Prairie led 2-0 after the first inning and then the Bullets scored 10 unanswered runs to get the win.
Eden Prairie scored a run on an RBI single and on that same play another run came home on an error.
Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of the second. Adelman singled and that sent home Van Ede. Both Adelman and Nelson then scored on an error to make it 3-2.
The Bullets extended their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third. Hesser hit Ellsworth home with a single and then scored on a Nelson single.
Brookings then scored another run in the bottom of the fourth as Jonas Murray came home on an error to make it 6-2. The Bullets made it an 8-2 game in the fifth. Murray hit Van Ede home with a single and then Grant Horn was walked with the bases loaded to score Murray.
The Bullets final two runs of the game came in the sixth. Van Ede scored on an Adelman ground out and then Murray sent Nelson home with a single to make the final 10-2.
Brookings had 11 hits in the win. Murray was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Adelman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hesser was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Nelson was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ellsworth was 1-for-3 and Horn had an RBI without a hit. Van Ede was 2-for-4.
Sunday
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 15, Brookings 14
Brookings scored 12 runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead but then DGF responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning to earn the one-run victory.
DGF led 9-0 after the first three innings. The Rebels scored a run on an RBI double in the first and then a bases-loaded walk and two runs scored on an error in the second made it 4-0. DG then scored a run on a ground out and an RBI single made it 6-0. Then an RBI double and a two-run single pushed the lead to 9-0.
Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Nelson hit Camden Reicks home with a single and then Van Ede scored on a passed ball to make it 9-2.
The Bullets then gained the lead in the top of the fifth. Reicks walked with the bases loaded and Van Ede hit Ellsworth and Horn home with a single to make it 9-5. Reicks then scored on a Jaacks sacrifice fly and Helmbolt hit an RBI single to make it 9-7. A bases-loaded walk from Horn and a two-run double from Ellsworth gave Brookigs a 10-9 lead. A two-run single from Reicks pushed the lead to 12-9 and then Nelson came home on an error to make it 13-9. The final run of the inning came when Jaacks hit a single and Van Ede scored.
DGF hit a two-run single and then a run from a wild pitch made it 14-12. A run from an error and a bases-loaded walk tied the game. The next batter was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and that gave the Rebels the win.
The Bullets had 10 hits in the loss. Reicks was 1-for-1 with three RBIs and Van Ede was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jaacks was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Ellsworth was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Helmbolt was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Nelson was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Horn had an RBI without a hit.
