Bullets swept in doubleheader with Yankton

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bullets 16U team was swept in a doubleheader against Yankton on Saturday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

The Bullets lost game one 14-5 and then fell 16-4 in game two. Brookings is now 4-6 and plays a doubleheader in Huron on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Yankton 14, Brookings 5

Yankton scored eight runs in the third inning and that allowed the Black Sox to come away with a nine-run win.

The Black Sox scored two runs in the top of the first. The first run came on an RBI single and the second was from an error.

Brookings took the lead in the bottom of the second. Camden Reicks and Brennan Cordes were walked to begin the inning. Reicks scored on a Lincoln Helmbolt ground out. Grant Horn then hit an RBI single and later scored on an error to make it 3-2.

Yaknton would respond with eight runs in the top of the third. Three-straight RBI singles made it 5-3. Runs from an error and a ground out pushed the lead to 7-3. A run from a wild pitch and a two-run single made it 10-3.

Wesden Van Ede walked for Brookings to start the bottom of the third and then advanced to second on a passed ball and made it third on a Cordes single. He then scored on a passed ball to make it 10-4 heading into the fourth.

The Black Sox scored a run on a passed ball and another run on a ground out to make it 12-4. Helmbolt was walked with the bases loaded to make it 12-5 in the bottom of the fifth.

Yaknton scored another run on an error in the top of the sixth. The Black Soxs final run of the game came on an error in the top of the seventh.

Brookings had four hits. Horn was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Cordes was 1-for-2. Helmbolt pitched three innings and gave up 10 runs, four earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Jace Jaacks pitched the final four innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and five walks.

Game 2: Yankton 17, Brookings 4

The Black Sox scored eight runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from the Bullets in game two.

Each team scored two runs in the first. Yankton scored runs on a single and wild pitch to make it 2-0. Horn hit a one-out single and Rylan Hesser was hit by a pitch and Eli Ellsworth walked to load the bases up. Horn scored on a Van Ede ground out and Hesser came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-2.

The Black Sox scored two more runs in the top of the third. The Black Sox led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then each base runner scored on a ground out to make it 4-2.

Brookings tied the game again in the fourth. Reicks walked to lead off the inning and then Mack Nelson was hit by a pitch and Aiden Adelman walked to load the bases with no outs. Reicks scored on a wild pitch and then Nelson scored on a Helmbolt single to make it 4-4.

Yankton regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. The first run came on a fielders choice and the next run was scored on a balk by the pitcher.

The Black Sox made it 9-4 in the top of the sixth. They scored another run on a balk and then two more runs came home on an error.

Yaknton scored runs on a wild pitch and a single to make it 11-4 in the seventh. A two-run single and a batter being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded pushed the lead to 14-4. Then a bases-clearing double made the final 17-4.

The Bullets had three hits. Van Ede and Helmbolt were each 1-for-4 with an RBI. Horn was 1-for-4.
