BROOKINGS The Brookings Bullets split a doubleheader with Marshall (Minnesota) at Bob Shelden Field on Tuesday night.
The Bullets lost game one 12-0 and then bounced back with a 13-9 win in game two. Brookings is now 4-4 and hosts a doubleheader with Yankton on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Game 1: Marshall 12, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)
Marshall scored in all five innings in game one and didnt allow a Bullets hit.
Marshall scored a run on an RBI single in the first and then a two-run single in the second made it 3-0. Another run on a passed ball made it 4-0 through three innings.
Two RBI doubles made it 6-0 in the fourth and then an RBI single later in the inning pushed the Marshall lead to 7-0.
Marshall then ended the game with five runs in the fifth. They scored runs on an error and a single to make it 9-0. Then a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk made it 12-0. Brookings was unable to score a run in the bottom of the inning and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
Camden Reicks drew two walks and Rylan Hesser had a walk as well.
Eli Ellsworth pitched four innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits with one strikeout and one walk. Brennan Cordes pitched one inning and gave up five unearned runs on three hits and had two walks and no strikeouts.
Game 2: Brookings 13, Marshall 9
Brookings fell behind 6-0 in the first inning but then scored 13 unanswered runs and that allowed the Bullets to earn the victory in game two.
Marshall scored a run on an error and then a two-run double made it 3-0. A run on a ground out and an RBI single pushed the lead to 5-0 and the final run of the inning was from an RBI single.
Brookings cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Wesden Van Ede was hit by a pitch and Mack Nelson was walked to start the inning. They both scored on a triple from Reicks and then Reicks scored on an error to make it 6-3.
The Bullets then scored nine runs in the third. Jace Jaacks hit an RBI double and two batters later he scored on a single from Van Ede. Cordes tied the game with an RBI single and then a bases-loaded walk gave Brookings the lead. Another bases-loaded walk made it 8-6 and then a two-run single from Jaacks pushed it to 10-6. Hesser followed with a two-run single of his own to make it 12-6 heading into the fourth.
Lincoln Helmbolt walked with one out in the fifth and then made his way to third on two passed balls. He then scored on a single from Ellsworth to make it 13-6.
Marshall scored runs on a ground out and a passed ball in the sixth. They then scored another run on a single to make the final 13-9.
Brookings had nine hits in the second game. Jaacks was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Ellsworth was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hesser was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Reicks was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Cordes and Van Ede were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Helmbolt was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Jaacks also pitched one inning and gave up six runs, one earned, on four hits with one strikeout and two walks. Aiden Adelman pitched the next four and two thirds innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Hesser pitched the final inning and a third and gave up no runs and one hit with one strikeout and one walk.
