BROOKINGS The Brookings Cubs improved to 3-0 in the amateur baseball season on Thursday night as they beat the Brandon Belugas 5-4.
Brookings fell behind 2-0 in the first but then scored four runs in the second inning. The Cubs then broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory.
Tyler Sandbulte led off the game with a single and Logan Kelling followed with a walk. Sandbulte then came home on a Daniel Buteyn ground out and Kelling scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0.
Brookings scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the second. Justin Cofell hit a single with one out and then Logan Anderson walked with two outs. Isaac Bonner then came to plate and launched one over the center field fence to give the Cubs the lead. Rhett Zelinsky then walked and advanced to third on a single from Chase McDaniel. Zelinsky came home on a single from Lincoln Vasgaard and Brookings led 4-2 heading into the third.
The Belugas tied the game in the fifth. Brayden Byrum led off the inning with a walk and then Sandbulte and Jackson Adams walked to load the bases up with one out. Byrum would score on a wild pitch and Sandbulte came home on a Buteyn single to make it 4-4.
Brookings regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Vasgaard walked to lead off the half inning and advanced to second on an error. He then came home on a Myles Rees single, making it 5-4 heading into the final two innings.
The Belugas went down one-two-three in the top of the eighth. They kept the Cubs off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score in the ninth despite having the bases loaded with two outs. Vasgaard struckout Nick Hokenstad for the final out of the game.
Brookings had 11 hits in the win. Bonner was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Vasgaard was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Rees was 1-for-4 with an RBI. McDaniel was 2-for-5 and Zelinsky was 1-for-2. Cofell was 2-for-4 and Tucker Wookey was 1-for-4.
Jake Ammann got the start for the Cubs and pitched five innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks. Zach Struck pitched the next three innings and gave up no runs and two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Vasgaard pitched the ninth and had two strikeouts and two walks.
Brookings will have the weekend off and will play the Elkton Snappers in Brookings on May 28 at 7:30 p.m.
