BROOKINGS Incumbent Teri Johnson and newcomer Cassandra Juba won seats on the Brookings School Board in Tuesdays city election. Johnson was the top vote-getter with 1691 votes, followed by Juba with 1344 and challenger Kelsey Bowman with 1280.
Johnson said shes pleased voters gave her another term on the board.
I am deeply honored and grateful for the support and trust people have shown by re-electing me to the Brookings School Board, Johnson said. I look forward to working with fellow board members, educators, students, staff, parents and administrators to ensure our schools continue to provide a safe, nurturing and challenging environment.
She said her top priority is providing students the best education the districts budget can support.
I am committedto working hard to fulfill the responsibilitiesthat come with this position, Johnson said. I want to assure our community that I will continue to make sure every student receives the best possible education and that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.
Juba said shes excited to begin her term on the board.
I am just incredibly honored and thankful for the trust the community has placed in me. Im also so honored to join a strong school board and work alongside them and a dedicated superintendent, she said. Im excited to contribute to important work thats already underway and remain committed to listening, learning and serving our students, staff, and community. This campaign has been all about listening, engaging and taking meaningful action for our students, families and educators. Im ready to get to work.
She also said shes eager to begin learning the ropes.
Obviously, theres going to be a period of learning and listening to the community and the current board and staff, Juba said. My top periods remain clear as they were in my campaign student success and well-being, supporting staff and fiscal responsibility. Every decision that I make will be centered on whats best for Brookings children and those who care for them.
Brookings County Finance Specialist Jenna Baker said voter turnout for Tuesdays city and school board election was approximately 15%. Thats down slightly from last Aprils election.
