ELKTON A rural Elkton resident accidentally shot himself in the leg over the weekend and was treated at Brookings Health System for his injuries.
The incident occurred at 8:31 a.m. Sunday near Elkton and involved a 55-year-old man, according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. Emergency personnel responded and were able to quickly stabilize the man.
Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote that the man was carrying a .22 caliber pistol in his rear pocket, and that when he attempted to remove it, the weapon discharged one round into his leg.
The incident is being investigated by the sheriffs office. The other responding agency was Elkton Ambulance.
