Fire torches semi on Interstate 29 near Brookings

BROOKINGS COUNTY Flames quickly engulfed a semi-truck north of Brookings on Interstate 29 on Wednesday night, but the driver escaped without injury.

The incident occurred at mile marker 143 and was reported at 7:47 p.m., according to a Thursday morning news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. It involved a 2018 Kenworth T680 with a box trailer.

The driver reported that his truck had been driving fine when he began having warning lights on his dash, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote. When he pulled over to investigate, smoke started coming from under the hood and the truck was engulfed in flames in about two minutes.
