BROOKINGS Corey Shelsta, professor of theater at South Dakota State University, will present The Art of Charcuterie at Art Museum Guild on Feb. 25. Coffee and social time begin at 9:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10 a.m.
Shelsa is not a trained chef, but explores charcuterie as a hobby and as a design experience. As he shares his personal hobby, he will meld his professional skills, discussing how design and art are interwoven in food experiences like charcuterie. His presentation will also feature techniques used in charcuterie and recommended pairings.
Guild membership is not required to attend the free monthly programs. However, $20 annual dues support these programs and the guild art acquisition fund. Membership is open to all. Programs begin in September and run through May.
The South Dakota Art Museum is at 1036 Medary Ave. in Brookings. There is designated free parking on Harvey Dunn Street, just west of the museum.
As a professor of theater, Shelsta designs lighting, scenery and sound for productions at SDSU and other theaters in the region. He also teaches courses in design, technical production and theater history.
During the summer, Shelsta is the production manager for Prairie Repertory Theatre. He was the resident lighting and sound designer at Theatre Memphis in Memphis prior to coming to SDSU.
Last year marked a milestone for Shelsta as he designed his 200th career production. He has won multiple awards for his work. They include SDSU Artist of the Year for An Evening with Harvey Dunns Feminine Images; Broadway World Award for Shrek the Musical (Lighting Design); Detroit Free Press Theatre award for Beyond the Horizon (Lighting Design) and Memphis Theatre Awards for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Lighting Design), As Bees in Honey Drown (Original Music), Gypsy (Sound Design) and A Piece of My Heart (Sound Design).
