BROOKINGS Come February, people with motor vehicle-related paperwork in Brookings County are going to want to get it out of the way sooner rather than later due to an outage thats set to partially begin Feb. 7 before fully kicking in Feb. 13.
Brookings County Finance Officer Lori Schultz told the Brookings Register on Thursday the South Dakota Department of Revenues Division of Motor Vehicles is transitioning to a new motor vehicle system, one that will be used statewide.
Their kiosks that they have and their website that normally people could go to and renew their tags or they could go out to Lewis Drug and renew their tags and do various things like that, those will be going down on Feb. 7, she said. People will not be able to use those on Feb. 7 until I do not know when they didnt give me an end date for that.
On Feb. 13-14, the switchover to the new system kicks in, so the Brookings County Finance Office will not be able to handle motor vehicle work on those days. That outage will include Feb 17-18 as well, with Feb. 17 being a holiday and training finishing on Feb. 18.
Schultz said training ensures everything is working before staffers begin processing peoples renewals and title transfers.
Id rather make sure its working than get somebody stuck in the middle of something, she said.
Schultz pointed out that the switch to a new system is something the state hasnt undertaken in years and, as such, there might be a hiccup or two and that people need to plan accordingly.
I would encourage people (whose documents) expire the month of February to definitely try to get their stuff done at the beginning of the month, Schultz said. Ive been around for two other of these, and there have always been hiccups. One time they had to kick the old system back on and delay the new system while they got those hiccups worked out.
