Cossack girls fall in OT to Hamlin, Charger boys pull away from Sioux Valley

VOLGA The Sioux Valley basketball teams were swept in a doubleheader against Hamlin on Tuesday night at the Cossack Center.

The girls lost a tough one in overtime, 62-59, while the boys fell to the Chargers 59-39.

The Cossack boys will host McCook Central/Montrose on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Sioux Valley girls will play in the DSU Classic on Saturday in Madison.

Girls

Hamlin 62, Sioux Valley 59 (F/OT)

The Chargers were able to outlast the Cossacks in the extra frame.

Both teams scored 15 points in the opening quarter. Sioux Valley then led 27-22 at halftime. The Cossacks extended the lead to 43-37 heading into the fourth but were then outscored 17-11 in the final quarter. Hamlin then outscored Sioux Valley 8-5 in overtime.

Sioux Valley shot 47.8% from the field and was 11-of-24 from three. Talya Vincent led the Cossacks with 19 points and six assists. Kailey Cradduck had 16 points and Liberty Trygstad had 10 points. Keyra Kruse had eight points and eight rebounds and Amari Ward had six points.

The Chargers shot 34.7% and were 8-of-27 from beyond the arc. Hamlin was led by Addie Steffensen who had 19 points. Issie Steffensen had 16 points. Addison Neuendorf had 13 points and eight assists. Paxton Nuendorf had 10 points and six rebounds.

The Cossacks had 22 rebounds and the Chargers had 24. Sioux Valley had 19 turnovers and Hamlin had 16. The Cossacks were 4-of-5 at the free throw line and the Chargers were 20-of-24.

Boys

Hamlin 59, Sioux Valley 39

The Chargers had a strong second half and were able to pull away from the Cossacks.

Sioux Valley led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. Hamlin then outscored the Cossacks 14-11 in the second quarter and took a 25-23 lead into the locker room. Hamlin used a 24-8 third quarter to lead 48-31 heading into the fourth. The Chargers had a 10-8 advantage in the fourth.

Sioux Valley shot 38.9% from the field and was 4-of-8 from three. Maverick Nelson led the Cossacks with 22 points. Tobin Squires had six points and six rebounds. Brock Christopherson had five points and four assists.

Hamlin shot 38.5% from the field and was 10-of-29 from beyond the arc. Jackson Wadsworth had 22 points to lead the Chargers. Easton Neuendorf had 15 points and Zac VanMeeteren had nine points.

The Chargers had a 23-19 advantage on the glass. Hamlin had 10 turnovers and Sioux Valley had 17. The Chargers were 9-of-15 at the free throw line and the Cossacks were 7-of-9 at the charity stripe.
