The Brookings Rangers boys varsity team went unbeaten in pool play to reach the semifinals of their tournament in Minnetonka before falling to eventual champion Osseo-Maple Grove.
Brookings 1, Edina 1
The Rangers and Hornets skated to a tie to open tourney play in Minnetonka.
Edina got on the board midway through the third period, but Brookings answered with less than 7 minutes to play in the game when Talon Hyde scored off passes from Riley Linstad and Nolan Krogman.
The teams finished the tight-checking game scoreless through overtime.
Brookings just outshot the Hornets, 26-24, and Matthew Bothe made 23 stops in the cage.
Brookings 5, Stillwater 1
The Rangers got in the win column with a steady 5-1 victory over the Stillwater Ponies.
Jason Ready led the way on offense, netting a pair of goals. Linstad, Carson Kludt and Hyde also scored for Brookings, who found the net in every period and scored three in the third.
Luke Honkomp had playmaker from the blue line for the Rangers. Jay Harris added a pair of assists. Caleb Johnson, Hyde and Linstad all chipped in apples.
Ryder Anderson got the start in net and earned the victory.
Brookings 5, Rosemount 3
The Rangers finished pool play by skating to a 4-0 lead over the Rosemount Irish and then holding off a furious comeback.
Linstad had a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner. Harris added a pair of his own, and Cody Jacobson opened the scoring for Brookings.
Harris also had an assist, along with Mason Diers, Kludt and Honkomp.
Bothe was back in net for Brookings, earning the win.
Osseo-Maple Grove 2, Brookings 1
The Rangers then dropped a Sunday morning semifinal to tournament champion Osseo-Maple Grove.
The game was tied until the final minute of the third when OMG netted the game winner.
Harris drew the Rangers level at 1 with less than a minute to play in the second period. Honkomp and Parker Nielsen got the assists on the powerplay goal.
Brookings outshot OMG 27-23. Bothe made 21 stops in net.
Junior Varsity
The Rangers JV played three tight games in Minnetonka to finish second in their pool but fall just short of championship play.
Brookings 3, Wayzata 2
Connor Buckley carried the Brookings offense with a hat trick in the 3-2 win. Jeremiah Hovey, Maxten Jensen and Mavrick Bortnem all had assists.
Neil Trygstad made 15 saves to earn the win in goal as Brookings outshot Wayzata 21-17.
Brookings 3, Mounds View 0
The Rangers then blanked Mounds View to keep things rolling.
Buckley scored first, followed by Cooper Schneider and Lucas Hovelson. Buckley, Jensen and Jameson Hunter had assists.
Paxtyn Pottorff got the shutout in between the pipes.
Edina 1, Brookings 0
The Hornets scored the lone goal of the game early in the third period. Edina finished pool play unbeaten and thereby advanced to the title game by the slimmest of margins.
Trygstad was back in goal and made 22 saves in the tough loss.
Girls 15U
The Rangers girls 15U team finished as runners up at their home tournament at Larson Ice Center, winning all three of their pool games before falling to a team from Kansas City in the final.
Brookings 7, Mitchell 0
The Rangers opened pool play with a shutout of Mitchell.
Sawyer Triplett scored a pair of goals for Brookings and Brooke Kruse added a pair of assists. Emily Meyer, Grace Devries, Lorelei Koch, Ashton Otteson and Allie Jacobson also scored for Brookings. Audrey Andal, Triplett, Meyer, Jacobson and Otteson also had assists.
Brookings outshot Mitchell 32-8. Avery Dentlinger made all 8 stops in the win.
Brookings 4, Mankato Mavericks 1
The Rangers scored a pair of goals in first two periods and again played stingy defense in a win over Mankato.
Triplett again led the way with a hat trick and Devries scored as well. Meyer chipped in an assist.
Brookings outshot Mankato 34-24 and Dentlinger made 23 stops to earn the win.
Brookings 5, Minot Wolves 0
Brookings go a balanced scoring attack to go along with another shutout against Minot.
Triplett, Khloe Ziegeldorf, Meyer, Kahlei Foerster and Koch all found the back of the net for the Rangers. Devries, Katie Vandersnick, Beatrick Hovey-Stubbles, Ziegeldorf and Kruse all had helpers.
Brookings narrowly outshot Minto 29-24, but Dentlinger was perfect between the pipes.
Kansas City Storm 2, Brookings 1 (OT)
The Rangers then dropped an overtime thriller in the championship game on Sunday.
Triplett scored for Brookings in the first, but Kansas Citys Zoe Ross answered in the second. The teams skated to a scoreless third period, but the Storm found the back of the net in overtime to take home the trophy.
The Rangers outshot Kansas City 27-19. Dentlinger made 17 saves.
Bantam A
The Brookings Rangers Bantam A team swept a pair of road games to move to 5-0 in SDAHA league play and stay atop the state standings.
Brookings 11, Huron 2
A balanced Brookings attack buried the All Stars in Huron on Friday night.
Ethan Foerester, Un-Hyeng Keay, Weston Diers and Jack Lovseth scored two goals each for the Rangers. Colt Vanmaanen, Grant Horn and Carter Nielsen also found the net in the blowout win.
Lovseth also recorded a playmaker with 3 assists on the night. Horn had two helpers, and Tegan Jensen, Vanmaanen, Nielsen, Keay, Foerster, Graham Gerlach and Cannon Friedrich also had assists.
Brookings outshot Huron 38-9. Jon Drew made 7 stops in net.
Brookings 10, Mitchell 0
The Rangers continued their unbeaten league season with a road win over Mitchell.
Lovseth again led the way with a hat trick for Brookings. Atwood Ahmann scored a pair of goals for the Rangers, with Kallen Serfling, Foerster, Vanmaanen, Horn and Diers also finding twine.
Lovseth recorded four helpers against the Marlins, while Vanmaanen added a pair, as did Diers. Goalie Jon Drew, Foerster and Ahmann recorded assists as well.
Brookings outshot Mitchell 37-5. Drew got the shutout in net.
Bantam B
The Rangers Bantam B team stayed hot, blasting Yankton 17-1 on the road to move to 3-1 in league play.
Ty Harris led the way with a six-goal game. Blaine Zweber had a hat trick of his own, while Liam Heiberger netted a pair for the Rangers. Jasper Pitts, Beau Luvaas, Maxx Anderson, Jackson Hahn, Elijah DeBoer and Pierson Rohl all found the net for Brookings.
Recording assists for the Rangers were Anderson with two, Harris, Heiberger with a pair, Landon Schumacher, Deacon Trumbo with two, Rohl and Luvaas.
The Rangers outshot the Miracle 35-13. Isaac Haufschild made 12 stops in goal to record the win.
Pee Wee A
The Rangers Pee Wee A team dropped a league contest at the Sioux Falls Flyers Blue, 4-1, on Saturday.
After the teams skated to a scoreless first period, the Flyers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead early in the second.
Ryker Schumaker got the Rangers within a goal at 7:59 of the second off a pass from Max Harris, but Brookings got no closer.
The Rangers outshot the Flyers 35-23. Brayden Britnall made 19 saves between the pipes.
Pee Wee C
The Rangers Pee Wee C team split a pair of road games on the weekend, hammering Mitchell 14-0 on Saturday before falling to Sioux Falls early Sunday morning.
Brookings 14, Mitchell 0
Cooper Hyde led the Rangers offensive onslaught against Mitchell, burying eight goals in the win. Brodie Bahe added a hat trick. Daniel Howey, Joey Francisco and Liam Diercks also scored for Brookings.
Diercks also chipped in three assists to earn a playmaker. Howey, Francisco, Adrian Almhjeld and Spencer Lovseth also had assists.
Porter Vanderbush stopped all 12 shots he faced in net to earn his second shutout win over the Marlins. Brookings outshot Mitchell 36-12.
Sioux Falls 4, Brookings 1
The Rangers then dropped a tough game against Sioux Falls, outskating and outshooting the Flyers but falling, 4-1.
Almhjeld scored Brookings lone goal in the first minute of the second period off a pass from Bahe.
Nash Billings got the start in net and turned away 19 Flyers shots.
Brookings outshot Sioux Falls 46-23 in the loss.
