Opportunistic Jacks rout Mount Marty

BROOKINGS The South Dakota State Jackrabbits capitalized off turnovers and had a strong performance in the paint to lead an 89-41 victory over Mount Marty University at First Bank & Trust Arena on Monday night.

The Jackrabbits were led by 34 points off 19 turnovers and scored 44 points in the paint to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Lancers hung around early as Tash Lunday scored 11 of his 14 points within the first 10 minutes of the game. A 3-pointer by the Flandreau native cut the SDSU down to 23-19 with 10:09 left in the first half but a 3-pointer by Kalen Garry and a layup by Owen Larson pushed the lead out to 28-19 with 8:50 to go until halftime.

The lead never dipped below seven points from there as SDSU used a 12-5 run to break the game open and an 11-3 run in the final 3:19 of the first half to take a 51-30 lead into halftime.

The Jacks continued their surge after halftime as SDSU opened the second half with a 20-4 run that extended the lead to 71-34 on Oscar Cluffs dunk with 8:43 left in the second half. SDSU put the game on cruise control from there to earn their second straight win to open First Bank & Trust Arena.

Cluff scored a team-high 14 points for the Jacks and grabbed nine rebounds. Garry had 13 points with four assists and three rebounds and Stoney Hadnot finished in double figures with 11 points.

Every active player on the roster scored in this game as well as Jaden Jackson had nine points and four rebounds, Damon Wilkinson and Isaac Lindsey had eight points each; Nate Barnhart had seven points and four rebounds and William Whorton and Matthew Mors each had six points.

Mors added five rebounds as part of SDSUs 42-21 advantage on the glass. The Jacks also shot 53 percent from the floor and 8-for-23 (35%) on 3-pointers. SDSU committed seven turnovers in the game and made 17-of-23 (74%) free throws.

Mac Ryken added nine points for the Lancers while Jared Lopez and Jake Jensen had five points each.

Mount Marty shot 33 percent from the floor including 9-for-21 (43%) on 3-pointers. The also missed both attempts from the free throw line.

SDSU will remain at home when they host Southern Mississippi at First Bank & Trust Arena at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
