Bombers’ bats power doubleheader sweep against Brandon Valley

Game 1: Brookings 29, Brandon Valley 0 (three innings)

The Bombers early and often, scoring seven runs in the first inning and 11 runs each in the second and third innings to run away with the first game of the doubleheader.

Brookingss offense took off early when Jude Meendering led off the game with a triple and scored on a passed ball. Ben Schulte singled, stole second base and advanced to third on an error before Nolan Krogman walked and stole second base.

With two runners in scoring position, Baker Hanson drove a pair of runs with an RBI single. Hanson went on to steal second and third base before scoring on a wild pitch and Mason Diers walked before making his way around the bases on three wild pitches to put the Bombers up 5-0.

Dixon Dauer and Jace Jaacks reached on back-to-back singles after Diers scored and Jaacks advanced to second base on a passed ball. Grant Wipf drove Jaacks in on a single and gave Brookings a 7-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

The Bombers loaded the bases early in the top of the second inning before Schulte scored on a wild pitch and Krogman scored on a passed ball. Dauer drove in a run with a groundout before Jaacks was hit by a pitch and Wipf singled to load the bases for the second time in the inning.

Diers scored on a wild pitch before Eli Ellsworth walked and Andrew Heinze singled to put the Bombers up 12-0. Meendering extended the lead with a two-run single before Schulte walked to load the bases.

Krogman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give Brookings a 15-0 lead before Hanson walked and Meendering scored on a wild pitch. Diers cashed in with a two-run double that capped the 11-run second inning and put the Bombers ahead 18-0.

The Bombers’ final rally of the game all occurred with two outs on the board. Ellsworth was hit by a pitch and Heinze hit a single to begin the rally before Meendering hit his second triple of the game to put Brookings up 20-0.

Schulte and Lincoln Helmbolt drew walks to load the bases and Hanson walked to drive in a run before Diers drove in two runs with an RBI single.

Brandon Valley committed back-to-back errors in the next two at-bats allowing Hanson to score before Wipf drove in a run with a single.

Ellsworth walked with the bases loaded to drive in another run before Heinze, Meendering and Schulte each drove in a run with a single to end the game.

Meendering finished 4-for-5 with two triples, three runs scored and five RBI. Heinze went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Wipf went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Schulte went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, three stolen bases, an RBI and four runs scored. Diers went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, four RBI and three runs scored.

Dauer went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Hanson went 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Jaacks went 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Krogman walked twice, drove in a run, stole a base and scored twice. Ellsworth walked twice with three runs scored and an RBI.

Krogman started the game allowing four walks and striking out four batters over two scoreless innings. Helmbolt finished the game allowing a walk with a strikeout over one scoreless inning.

Game 2: Brookings 28, Brandon Valley 4 (three innings)

The Bombers bats kept rolling as they scored 14 runs in the first inning, 10 runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning.

The first-inning rally began when Schulte reached on an error and advanced to second base with one out. Krogman drove Schulte in with a double before Hanson and Diers drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Wipf, who drove in the second run of the game with a single.

Dauer doubled to drive in a pair of runs before Ellsworth and Helmbolt drew back-to-back walks to load the bases once again. Dauer scored on an error to make it 6-0 and Meendering drove in two runs with a single to put Brookings up 8-0.

Schulte followed up with a two-run triple and scored on an error to put the Bombers up 11-0 and Hanson drove in a run with a triple to put Brookings up 12-0.

Diers walked in the following at-bat before Hanson scored on an error. Dauer was hit by a pitch and Ellsworth drove in the final run of the first inning with a sacrifice fly.

Brandon Valley got a run back in the bottom of the first inning but the Bombers kept putting up runs. The top of the second began when Jaacks reached on an error and Meendering drove him in with a single to put Brookings up 15-1.

Meendering stole second base to put him in position to score on Schultes second triple of the game before Krogman reached on an error and and Hanson hit a three-run homer to give the Bombers a 19-1 lead.

Diers reached on an error and Wipf doubled to put two runners in scoring position and Dauer and Ellsworth each drove in a run with singles to put Brookings up 21-1. Helmbolt singled in the next at-bat before Jaacks, Meendering and Hanson each drove in runs with with a single to put Brookings up 24-1.

The Bombers used another two-out rally to put up four runs in the top of the third inning. After Dauer reached on an error and Ellsworth walked, Jaacks singled and Dauer scored on an error. Meendering drove in another run with a single before Schulte drove in the Bombers final two runs of the game with a triple.

Diers earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Helmbolt got the final two outs of the third inning, picking up a strikeout.

Meendering went 4-for-5 with a stolen base, three runs scored and five RBI. Schulte went 3-for-5 with three triples, three runs scored and five RBI. Hanson went 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple, a walk, a stolen base, three runs scored and five RBI. Wipf went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Dauer went 2-for-3 with a double. Jaacks went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Krogman went 1-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, three runs scored and two RBI. Ellsworth went 1-for-1 with two walks, a stolen base, two RBI and three runs scored. Helmbolt went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Diers walked twice, stole a base and scored three times.
