Public invited to Six-Mile Creek flooding discussion in Brookings

BROOKINGS After a dry summer, fall and now winter, spring flooding is likely not something youre worrying about. But people who live near Six-Mile Creek know the risk of flooding is inevitable, especially during the spring months. If that concerns you, the city of Brookings invites you to a Monday meeting for an update on its Six-Mile Creek Feasibility Study.

The public meeting is scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Brookings City and County Government Center at 520 Third St. The event will take place in the Council Chamber on the third floor.

A presentation by city staff and consulting engineers will kick off the meeting. Citizens will then be invited to ask questions and share their feedback.

Six-Mile Creek meanders through the western part of the city of Brookings, flowing through 20-plus bridge and culvert crossings. During high-flows, Six-Mile Creek has the potential to impact more than 240 structures.

The goal of the Six-Mile Creek Feasibility Study is to identify structural mitigation options to improve flood resilience along the Six-Mile Creek corridor within the city. Ultimately, we want to reduce future losses to structures and public infrastructure along the Six-Mile Creek corridor, said City Public Works Director John Thompson.

The study is funded through FEMAs Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, and the work is being carried out by the citys contractor, RESPEC of Rapid City.

The study will:

  • Evaluate flooding and potential mitigation over a range of flood flows
  • Leverage new flood mapping to understand and mitigate flood risk
  • Recognize flood factors and high flood-risk areas
  • Develop flood mitigation alternatives to reduce risk
  • Identify flood mitigation projects that are eligible for federal funding

Flooding is the most costly and common natural disaster in the United States, according FEMA.
